-He got an email 2 days before a show from Karl asking if he'd like to take part in a secret project, but no one at all, NO ONE, could know about it. -He was told to rank TBA/Pinkerton tracks on a scale of 100 before coming. -He went there with 3 other people who were active Weezer fans online, i.e. from Twitter and a6. He said lots of other members on A6 have been involved in focus groups for years. -Earlier groups and their responses did actually shape the songs a fair bit, and they got to hear a lot of unreleased material (like Rules of Life) -His session was in August of 2014 and so he heard ewbaite exactly as we hear it. He said he made some suggestions but none were kept as it was fairly close to release. -They basically just met Karl who played them new music. They ranked the songs on the 100 scale and also were asked to write feedback. Apparently all the info was anonymized and sent to Rivers. -They were told to not talk to anyone about having been there, not their spouses, not even acknowledging it with the band, or the whole thing would become 'null and void'. -Focus groups have been going on for a long time, since the home demo days.

Unreleased songs people heard in ewbaite focus groups: East Coast vs West Coast, Rules of Life, English versions of Cyclone, Doo-Wop, Fun in the Sun, and New Girl from the second S&R album.

It was stressed during the focus groups that no one could ever know about them. Leaving the opportunity open for more focus groups in the future was kind of an unspoken incentive to keep your mouth shut. Wouldn't you be quiet if you could hear unreleased stuff and feel special? The secrecy thing might sound extreme, but it would look bad for Rivers and the band if the focus groups were widespread knowledge. People here would riot if they knew some of the questions that were asked.
AT LEAST half a dozen people on ATW were in the focus groups but there were probably many more.
There was once a version of The British Are Coming called "Don't Mess With My Girl."
Fun in the Sun's English ewbaite version was called thank God for girls

Elaboration of first post:
"There were no NDAs for the Focus Groups. I received an email from Karl less than 48 hours from a Weezer show I was going to attend. I had signed up through the fan club for the meet and greets (back when they were included in membership), and so here I am with this email from Karl.... This is not copy and pasted, because I want to remain anonymous and it is possible that Karl coded each email to catch the leakers, but the email basically said: Can you keep a secret? If so, there is a project that I need your help with. But you can't tell anyone -- not friends, not neighbors, online people, wives, husbands, or even the band if you see them. If you can't keep a secret, delete this email. But if you can, keep a secret, respond to this email that you are willing and more details will be forthcoming.
I responded yes, and then 24 hours before the show, I got another email. The jist of it: Here is the address of a meeting place near the concert venue. We'll meet there about 10 hours before the show. The project is to listen to some new Weezer music and rank the songs on a 0 to 100 scale. We'll also ask you to write down comments and reactions to the songs as you listen. No one has heard any of these songs, the band members won't be there, and while they will be shown your reactions, they will all be kept 100% anonymous.
This will take roughly 5 hours. If you ever see the band or talk to them online after this, you must never acknowledge that you were in this project. They aren't even aware of sessions happening on specific days, and it has to remain that way. Before the session, you need to rate the songs on blue and pinkerton from 0-100.
So, I did as the email said and ranked the albums. We were told to bring the rankings with us to the meeting place. So, I got there 10 hours before the concert, and started to see other people I recognized from the Fan Club. Eventually, I saw Pat and Scott walking around together and wanted to say something, but knew I had no reason to be there that I could share with them, so I didn't.
We finally met up with Karl and he filled us in. We'd be listening to Weezer's new album and rating the songs on the album.
I won't go into detail of what I heard or when my session was. I don't want to give away my identity. Further, I still feel like this project could turn into something. Why else would all of this be kept secret from the band? I will say, a girl at the listening group with me said this was her 7th or 8th, and that she had been doing it for over a year. She said that the album had gone through many different forms. I've spoken with her since the release of the album, and she feels that the album had two or three versions that were much better than what was finally released.
I will say: Our group was talkative. We're shared our thoughts as we listened to the songs. No one in the group liked Back to the Shack. It was universally panned in the group. I don't believe we had any real input on the final product, so I think its weird that we were asked to do any of this anyway, especially in secret.
As for why I was chosen? I have no idea. The group I was in was represented by a member of AllThingsWeezer (myself), a Twitter fan (not a member of the fan club, he said he only really interacts with Weezer on twitter), and two fan club members. These were definitely not the Weezer elite. One of them said they hadn't even listened to any new Weezer since the Red album and thought Maladroit was their best album.

Ewbaite went through 7-8 different forms, starting from when it was just ecce homo and more cuomonoly. Some of the focus group members had a lot of influence on the final version, including lyrical changes and inclusion of specific riffs based on their feedback.
White was also focus grouped.

I wasn't aware there were White focus groups; I had assumed they had stopped when I stopped getting invited in 2014. Some White tracks were in the EWABITE / Early Album 9 demo sessions.

And Flight Plans. One of the other songs from ecce homo: "Gravity Will Bring You Down." The chorus lyrics were: "Not every man is a super man not every girl is a super girl. So cut your coupons while you can, cause gravity will bring you down." It was supposed to be one of the best Rivers demos from the era. From what I've heard, it was like Superfriend, but also in the style of British/Cleo/Foolish Father. The bridge was one of the most creative Rivers has ever done. But, it was dark. It had references to the Hindenburg going down and it had all these little kids watching their daddies burn. And then their was a choir singing a descending line representing the Hindenberg falling to the ground. Between Foolish Father, Rules of Life and Gravity, Ecce Homo seemed to REALLY focus on the father-child relationship (as written from the perspective of a father who feels he failed)
