Some of you are missing the point. This is not a debate about ethics. I, like most of you, can morally justify downloading music in advance on the basis that I've already pre-ordered it and have proof that Weezer/Universal has my money.
Instead, let this serve as a reminder that in some ways this is not about us. No, this is about the yahoos (Outloud Tour) who lurk here or might soon create an account (we're being flooded with new accounts) and circulate material elsewhere; you know, like at the thousands of other places on the Internet where people aren't shelling out big chunks of change for pre-orders.
In other ways this is about us. It's about preserving whatever "integrity" and sense of community that this cesspool hast left. For those of you who unaware, we've been around for a while and we've built quite a reputation. As a result, journalists frequent ATW to look for leads and have sourced us in their publications. Members of the Weezer camp (band members, management, publicists, friends) visit here to get a pulse on the fan-base. There's also the sense of community we facilitate both online and IRL. (Did you know several couples have met on here and gotten engaged/married? I'm still waiting for the invitations to the weddings of course, but that's beside the damn point).
Last but not least, let's not shake our entitled Johnsons at Rivah Weezah. He hasn't been quoted as saying so yet, but EWBAITE is his next Pinkerton, if for no other reason than it is conceptual and we've heard enough of it to know that there are some serious Heart Songs on this release. Hell, Cumin has invested so much in this record that he hired professional actors to be filmed for a series of teasers so that his little bitches have something to look forward to every #weezerwednesday. So then, I say we rally like those kids at the end of Foolish Father and show some respect for our geek rock God, Raven Chromeo & his band, the integrity of the record itself, & for our humble little slice of Internet pie.
Plus, it is illegal to distribute copyrighted material. I don't wish to see this place get shut down and then have to resort to registering a new account at whatever this place gets reincarnated as, such as AllThingsWeezer.com or something.
So then, if you post copyrighted material, we are banning you and removing the links promptly.
Regards,
Ben Hogan
